initial response

First Impressions of play

My first impressions of the play were very positive as im very open to trying ew things and as im very interested in history and English so looking at this strong piece of literature intrigued me. I love the story and the idea that you can expect life to give you so much but  (through hardship) learning to be happy and accepting where you come from and what you have is more important than anything.

however my initial first impressions were good i did however, start to think about the challenges we may face as this play like the fact the ytext is difficult and the transformation from one character in scene one to the other . I thought that in order to show our individual distinct characters we would need physical theatre. I suppose my first impression of the objects being physicalized were negative as i do believe that the costume and set is key to bringing this play alive and especially that of the main character Estella, as in the 1800s women very much relied on what they wore to reflect their wealth and personality.

When we read through the script together, my initial reaction was that I love the idea that the chorus are weaved into all the scenes and thought about making the chorus into physical characters rather than virtual as the chorus are the thoughts and feelings of Pip.

great expectations - interpretaion the play.....

great expectations  is Charles Dickens's thirteenth novel..Great Expectations is a bildungsroman, or a coming-of-age novel, and it is a classic work of Victorian literature. It depicts the growth and personal development of an orphan named Pip.
It is set among the marshes of Kent and in London in the early to mid-1800s.From the outset, the reader is "treated" by the terrifying encounter between Pip, the protagonist, and the escaped convict, Abel Magwitch. Great Expectations is a graphic book, full of extreme imagery, poverty, prison ships, "the hulks," barriers and chains, and fights to the death. It therefore combines intrigue and unexpected twists of autobiographical detail in different tones. Regardless of its narrative technique, the novel reflects the events of the time, Dickens's concerns, and the relationship between society and man.
Great Expectations has a colourful cast that has entered popular culture: the capricious Miss Havisham, the cold and beautiful Estella, Joe the kind and generous blacksmith, the dry and sycophantic Uncle Pumblechook, Mr Jaggers, Wemmick with his dual personality, and the eloquent and wise friend, Herbert Pocket. Throughout the narrative, typical Dickensian themes emerge: wealth and poverty, love and rejection, and the eventual triumph of good over evil.Great Expectations has become very popular and is now taught as a classic in many English classes. It has been translated into many languages and adapted many times in film and other media.
